New Group - Film Photography

Hi, everyone. I didn't see any active groups for film photography, so I wanted to create one.

I got into film photography last year and fell in love and would really enjoy seeing everyone else's film work. :)

I know there are some die-hard film photographers in here but I would assume they are greatly outnumbered by digital photographers now who will soon apparently be swamped by AI enthusiasts.

On the other hand...
Digital photography has improved vastly since it started and there are even plug-in filters to give it a film quality appearance.

I personally "fell in love" with not having to pay for film or to get it developed. It also opened up a whole new world for my creative side in using the computer and applications to add and remove elements for manipulating or enhancing what I've captured.

The digital side of image making has its own set of skills but of course is related and sometimes dependent on photography... Kind of like the similarities of photography to canvas and drawing work using some of the same principles for composition.

Good luck with your endeavors but always, always... keep an open mind. :)

PS:
If you want others to show you their film images in this thread, get permission from Admin - Abbie Shores to allow the posting of images. :)

I hope I’ll have some film images to contribute in the near future. I just put a new roll in the old Minolta. We’ll see how it goes. :-)

Brian,

I actually also do digital photography and other types of art! I just personally enjoy film the most and wanted to see a group dedicated to it. :)

I love that it forces you to be very conscious about what you're shooting and how much work and care goes into each photograph being developed, scanned, etc. Not to say that you can't put the same intention into digital photography, but there's something about knowing I only have 36 shots and how much it costs that really slows you down.

Digital is definitely better for certain areas, though. I probably would have never gotten one of my favorite shots (Muscovy Duck) if I was trying to take that with a film camera, as I took dozens of photos during that day and that's one of the only ones that I liked how it turned out.

But maybe in a year or two I will hate how pricey it is. ;)

Welcome Kayla! I have a few film images I will upload to your group. I also built a little plastic 35mm Recesky TLR pinhole camera years ago and have played around with a 120 LOMO.
The final output of these cameras is always exciting to see. I had to argue with one local film shop to actually print them as they said they were out of focus. I said, what do you expect from a pinhole experiment?

Richard,

That is very cool!!
Wow, I can't believe a film shop cared if they were out of focus or not.

I used to spend a $1000 on film and processing every month, thank goodness for digital

Thousands of slides are waiting for a scan, too much work, so here we are, have fun with this group Kayla....

I straddle both camps, although with a bigger foot in digital I’ve never been able to fully let go of film. So I’ve joined.

Film photography is all I do. Even though I have a number of 35mm and 120 cameras, I mainly do 4x5 and 8x10 large format, incl. developing or cooking as it is called sometimes. My oldest working camera is from 1937 and my newest from 1988 (not counting my pinhole cameras)

I did digital for a number of years, but got bored with it and I don’t like where it seems to be going

There are a few groups for analog photography here, but they are not very active.

I joined of course
