442 Sqdn RCAF - Caribous

Two Mustangs, revelling in the peaceful conditions at high altitude, recovering to their base at the tail end of WW2. By this time, almost total air superiority had been achieved by the Allied forces and the need for any degree of camouflage had been dispensed with - hence the very individual colour schemes.

The Canadian Mustangs are from 442 RCAF Squadron based at RAF Hunsdon, only a few miles south of Duxford. It was one of the first squadrons to operate from Continental bases moving to France on 14 June 1944 where they served, eventually flying Spitfires, with considerable distinction. They were involved in what is thought to be the last European WW2 operational sortie when they were sent to Guernsey on 9th May (the day after VE day!) to oversee the surrender of the German forces in the Channel Islands.

Have been interested in photography since just after WW2, when film became freely available again, using Kodak Autographic equipment. Graduated, in the 50's, to 35mm and was involved in photographic work during my 17 yrs as RAF aircrew - navigator. Since retirement and migrating to Canon digital equipment have been involved with two of my sons and one grandson in a considerable amount of photographic activity, particularly composite images. Now producing digital art prints with the major emphasis on classic warbird aviation. With son, Duncan, now becoming a well-known and published wild life photographer we have started, in 2017, a new gallery reflecting Scottish sea birds - and 'feathered' flight
