For fifteen years as a Franciscan Sister of Maria Stern in Augsburg, Germany, Frances Streitel served students and orphans. Longing for a more austere life, she entered the Carmelite convent in Werzburg.

Though finding the prayer and sacrifice of Carmel fulfilling, she experienced a further call to unite the active and contemplative life. To the embarrassment of all, this middle-aged woman left the convent and returned to her parents� house in Mellrichstadt, Germany, to await the opportunity to make this vision a reality. In 1883 she was invited to Rome to begin a new foundation. The Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother focused on their contemplative lives during the first years. Only then did they reach out...
