Category For Heavily Digitally Altered Photograph

Would you categorize a photograph that's been heavily digitally altered to the point where it doesn't really look like a photograph anymore as a photograph or as digital art?

Most of my photographs are only lightly edited, but I'm exploring heavier artistic effects, and I'm not sure which category to use on this site. (I describe what it is in the description, so anyone who's interested in buying would know exactly what they're getting. This is really just about which category to select in the drop-down menu.)

I think it is up to you to decide, if people like it they most likely won't care how you categorize it

Thanks, Nina.

Do you think it makes a difference when people are searching the site? Do people often search by medium?

I don't know if people search by medium, but when I digitally alter my original work I categorize it as digital -- because there is very little and/or no resemblance to the original watercolor painting.

I do the same as L A, I choose digital art as the medium if I alter my photographs to resemble painterly or graphic art images.

That makes sense, L A and Gabby. I think I just have a hard time selecting "digital art" because I consider myself a photographer!

I really think the Category is irrelevant as the important thing to attract Buyers is your off site marketing and promotion of your images, mostly on Social Media sites, where the Category is not displayed.

Digital art usually means that it doesn't originate from a photo. But I will put Photography as the category for all my work

I don't see any heavily altered images on your page? Or have you not uploaded any yet?

There is no one category for anything. You can just call it creation. People usually don't look it up by method. Call it digital art, digital painting whatever you want.

Personally I put under Photography anything that originated as a photograph

I put both when it no longer looks like a photo: Photography - Digital Art

I am a photographer myself (mainly travel photography), and I was also in doubt on how to categorize photos that I have been highly altered digitally.

I was never sure, but this is how I do it:

Medium: Photography - Digital abstract art or Photography - Digital painting, or Photography - Digitally altered, or other definitions as I have the inspiration...

and in the

Artwork Category: I either insert Photograph or Mixed Media

BTW: I also made collections with those specific alterations:

1. DIGITAL Work on my Travel Photography

2. AI Recreated Original Photography

3. Digital images only

Laurel,

I think it's more about the origin of the image, not so much what has been done with it. Here are 3 examples and the last image probably is more "digital art", but still a photo:

Wall Art

Sell Art Online

Buy Art Online

All 3 flavors could stand on their own, but I would always call them photos,

I say Digital but up under medium I say "Photography - Digital Painting". I do have a bit of a concern with it being confused with AI when I select Digital as the category.

I am very specific and write: Digital work based on my original painting or photograph; not AI

Western Exposure

I too select Digital Art as the category and "photomanipulation" or something like that as the Medium, once it goes beyond normal post-edits or a bit of texture etc.
It's a pity that category also now includes AI. I hope that gets separated out into its own category.

Yes Laurel Gale I would say you are a great photographer. You may touch things up but really it's straight photography.
I am the same I touch it up in different programs but it's a photo.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone! You've given me a lot of food for thought.

Jessica, I have only uploaded one that fits this category, and I uploaded it so recently that it might not be showing up yet. I'm working on more and hope to upload them soon.

Robert, thank you! For most of my photography, I try to keep to minimal edits so I stay true to what I actually photographed, but I've been working on some more heavily/artistically edited/transformed pieces.

I categorize almost all of my edited photos as digital art. sometimes I will put photo manipulation or digital photo painting or digital watercolor etc... I only put photography on photos that look like photos and have minimal editing.

Some time back I think I remember being told by the powers that be it was supposed to be in the digital category.

I am close to Shelli!! I put mixed media, as many of my images are a combination of a painting I did by looking at something or not first, then photographed that painting and finished the image in digital painting/artwork. If from the photo still mixed media as I am going to digitally paint it. Photos are photos.

I have a large collection of both, if i add digital art effects i classify the image as digital art, if i simply edit my photos with an edit or filter it’s a photograph. Keep it simple, most people who see an image want to identify the image immediately, they’re never going to sit there and think, i wonder if that was once a photograph.

Digital art

If You can clearly recognize it as (former) photo, than photography - digitally altered.
If not, digital art
