Vivaldi Could Build Mastodon Into Web Browser

"Vivaldi has launched its own Mastodon instance and has hinted that it could build support for the alternative social network into its web browser.

Mastodon has seen an influx of users in recent weeks, as many Twitter users turn their backs on Elon Musk’s network and his increasingly erratic behavior.

That’s led to many organizations launching their own Mastodon instance to help support the rapidly growing userbase, with the browser maker becoming the latest company to stake its claim."

socel.net, .art

Are these different to .social at all?

Oops, I see Mastodon is a decentralised
family of servers and extension names.

.Art is currently closed to new users due
to a massive influx of new accounts ...

As long as Mastodon remains independent i.e. securely embedded in the Blockchain Technology
(where it remains decentralised and 'untouchable' by a Musk-type controlling figure) I'd support
any browser into which it is built. I am also trying the app DeSofy - also decentralised on the
Blockchain.

Not an early adopter, I’ll wait and see, as interest in NFTs and Metaverse already seem to be waning.

Blockchain is not exclusively NFT. What it does is it promotes
a "non-hierarchy" where each and every member of the comm-
unity has an equal say - no overarching algorithms - and no
overweening Musk-type figures either.

Control of the rooms created on a Blockchain basis is consensus
based; a given number of members must vote on any changes
to the room (its content, its direction, its politics, even its language)
and is all very fair and democratic. Corporations are locked-out!
(Unless they build their own spaces, of course!)

Man, picking a server is giving me anxiety. Photog.social seems right, but they're not on the 'official' list. I don't know how important that is, though.

Was gonna go with mastadon.social, but the first thing I saw on that page was a flood of political posts.

Interesting - and timely, with Twitter and Facebook in serious trouble. But they sure could have picked a better name.

This could be very interesting, Thank you for the intro link, Frank. I am optimistically enthusiastic that this could be reclaiming the web and making it what it should be.

@tinstag@ioc.exchange

Jason, the server is unimportant, that's the beauty of the fediverse! The smaller the server the faster and better service you should get.

Look before you leap.

I don't see them ever even coming close to competing with Twitter.

Twitter has over 192 million users. Mastodon has one million. What I see is a bunch of Hollowood elitess, from one side of the political spectrum, and then the "I hate Elon" and "I hate that (the guy we can not mention)" people that are jumping ship from Twitter.

Do they add to any sizable loss of buying power in the way of people that purchase prints from FAA? I don't think so.

You add another SM platform that has been floundering around since 2016 (and still only has one million users), and you are now spreading your marketing efforts even thinner. And for what, to reach a comparably minuscule market?

A political agenda is what is driving all the fuss about Twitter. I know we are not supposed to talk about politics, but that is precisely what this is.

I refuse to make my business decision based on ANY political agenda.

I am not suggesting it is a mistake to join, I am saying it is, IMHO, a mistake to think they are going to be any sort of serious competition or replacement to Twitter or Facebook.

I was talking about using it as a social platform (remember those days). Not everything is about marketing. It's nice to have something without freakin' ads everywhere. That's why I hardly use Facebook even though I have FBPurity installed to keep the fluff off my feed.

Mike,

Who knows what he's doing. I just hope the powers that be hold him accountable for any harm his platform causes in the outside world. Its all fun and games, until it isn't.

I can sort of see the govt bailing him out, but I can't see them giving him anywhere near what he paid. But he may take it and run. But what they do to the site... Who knows. I can't see anyone else willing to pay for it other than very rich countries. If he was smart he would put it back exactly like he left it. But he fired so many people so suddenly, it will never be the same again. On the plus side he is losing a lot of money every day. So there is at least that.

But so many places depend on twitter because they made it work for them. And if it goes so does their business.

I wonder how mastodon or all the other social places, helps you in google. Does any of it index?

Mike, I was wondering the same thing about Mastodon. I am not sure how it works...

I cant find an auto posting app yet,,have not looked hard..I got a vivalde account also but basically same thing just dfferent server.

Only posting once a day so far and reached limit for following people..

Mike Savad

Based on these addresses people are posting, all on different servers, would they see it as a social site?

I'll keep waiting for the winner to show up. So far i've heard of 2-3 other sites people are going to. And there are so many others out there.

Mike, it doesnt matter what server you choose, they all talk to one another. There was an artists server , but that one filled up and they stopped anymore from joining it right now...I am on the social mastodon server. I think its all about the hashtags someone uses and what others search for...

Mike Savad

What I means is, that because there are a 1000 servers, will google look at each one and know its a social site? Right now it helps you in google some how, if you are in twitter. But twitter is a single entity (right now). Like google may index the artist server but not the others? I think its a bit confusing. Reminds me of geocities.

I wouldn't want to be on an artist server anyway, i'm selling to the public. Not sure why I would need it to be artist only. And just the fact that a server can fill up is worrisome, because its not just us that wants to join. Could that network even handle the 175 million people that twitter has?

----Mike Savad

Jon Glaser

i think the because there is no centralized server, it can handle it..The reason the server for artists closed down is because there has been an influx since the twitter debacle...I am treading lightly though and not going to waste too much time on it..In case twitter evolves...the exodus from twitter is pretty large right now. Especially because Muskyboy allowed the Orange turd and MJT back on..and others that spread hate..

I think I will stick with Twitter for now at least until I hear about it going bankrupt!

@Bee Creek Photography- Twitter is morally bankrupt at this point!

A little over a dozen celebrities have left,,among some companies...Not much yet..

Gary Whitton

Jon,

I think what is more important is who has stopped advertising, and most of the big fish have pulled their ads. That's a lot easier to do than erasing an account and then having to rebuild your follower base if the sunshine comes out I expect Europe to intervene long before it becomes the wild west again. That's 500 million people collectively pulling the plug, not a small thing.

I've now been there since... Well quite a while

It's the best I've been on. Small learning curve and huge advantages. People I've never met are following my new paintings and I'm being 'tooted' regularly.

The secret is to boost people's posts. If you do that they are spotted on other servers. Boost good ones only. They then come to look at you and you get boosted more regularly

Really love it.

So, we're a few months into the Mastodon migration and I'm wondering how everyone else is doing with it? My followers have really dropped off, but engagement with my posts is still way way higher than I experienced on the bird site. Overall the engagement has stayed pretty civilized as well. I haven't run into any real trolls either. It's definitely a change not being spoonfed content by an algorithm, but it's definitely been for the best. I love being able to follow hashtags to get the content I want.

As a side note, you can can also manage your follows and followers in the preferences section. I recently removed all dormant followers and lost over 230. Ouch! So it seems like a lot of the late 2022 adopters have stopped using it already.

Mike Savad

Besides engagement are you getting any actual clicks from the site? I'm never sure what an engagement is, and can it be faked? Just to show its doing well, the site could be faking it to encourage you to stay.

I plan on to keep waiting to see what happens and let it level out and settle. Because doing the work now only to find out that the buyers went to the Ostrich or whatever, would annoy me.

----Mike Savad

Mike, it's one of the problems with Mastodon. No stats on clicks or even views for that matter. Hope they update that for people using it for ecommerce purposes.

That being said, click-thru rate on Twitter was nonexistent, so whatever it is on Mastodon, it couldn't be any worse.

Regarding faking it? No, I don't think so. You can see who is boosting or favoriting your posts.

I feel like Mastodon's biggest hurdle will be with Jack Dorsey's 'Bluesky" when it goes public.
