Description
.NARRATIVE
Trucks in Oz by Art James West
Just over the mountains of northern New Mexico lies an odd little rural city of peculiar shapes and sizes. It used to be made of Adobe. But, something peculiar happened. And although it's rather like that other odd city just beyond Kansas it is not that place, although one might be fooled by its high green spires. But, vintage trucks travel these roads paved in yellow cobblestone not brick. And it's the sort of place where tourists roam about and folks speak Spanish and Tewa and the gringos float around in balloons. I say it's An American Parody in Oz, a parody of both as it's really neither, though some might argue they both exist somewhere over the rainbow.
BACKGROUND
America's landscape has great cities and roads and cars, but we also share its books and movies, including, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum now in the public domain. "An American Fairytale" continues my "I Dreamed America" series with a bit of humor, with Apricot Lane in Taos painted as Yellow Cobblestone and Denver near the Denver Art Museum transformed into an emerald city alla Frank Lloyd Wright's American architecture and, of course, yellow Chevys. Oz has become part of our shared iconic history, like baseball and cowboys and Chevys. Who doesn't know of Dorothy and Kansas? L. Frank Baum's, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is now part of our collective consciousness. Happiness isn't somewhere over the rainbow, it's right where you are. It's about being at home with ourselves. And it's not just our highways that keep us connected. It's our collective imagination. It's my dream that "I Dreamed America", will bring us closer together, united as it were, and perchance to laugh a little along the way. I Dreamed America.
