Balanced Rock can be found perched on the hillside along the west side of Trough Creek valley. This huge block of Pocono Formation sandstone appears precariously balanced on the edge of the cliff ready to slide into the valley, but has actually been there for years.
This rock is an �erosion remnant� that was left behind with other large blocks of sandstone when Trough Creek began to carve its valley millions of years ago. The current position of the rock today is not too far from its original position. The block of sandstone assumed its place by being broken from rock cliffs that are now gone that once formed the higher part of the ridge above where the rock now resides. After the rock broke from these cliffs it has moved slowly downhill while the other broken blocks below it have weathered away. Thus, the rock came to rest through the years giving the appearance of balancing on the cliffs edge.
