About This Painting
PROCESS
This is a composite of New York City, New Jersey, Wyoming and New Mexico.
NARRATIVE
A green VW "Bug" crawls up a dirt road, over a hill to a dale beyond. Not the sort of dale one might expect to find beyond a grassy green hillside covered in bright red Indian Paintbrush, but rather a fabulous, rather densely packed city. The words "I Love New York City", freshly painted on a building, beckon to adventure, along with a bright blue banner hanging from the painters dangling platform sporting the word JAZZ. Beyond the hustle, a river flows. On its distant shore, buildings glint and reflect hot yellow white from the setting sun. The sunset glows deep red over a faraway cobalt mountain with one lonely snow covered peak.
BACKGROUND
Although my paintings have a certain surrealistic, almost fantasy type quality, I do work with reference material. For me what I have seen and where I have been are a necessary part of the creative process. I take a lot of photographs. "I Love New York City Jazz" began with a small 8" x 10" sketch using a photograph I took of my '62 Volkswgen "Bug" that I drove to college. I then incorporated a photograph I took while living in New York City looking west across the Hudson towards New Jersey, and finally I stepped outside to include Taos Mountain in the distance. Shortly thereafter, I began a large scale painting on linen that became "A Bug into the Valley". My use of the word "Bug" apparently bothered Volkswagen even though it was my Volkswagen, so I decided to have another go at it and move the emphasis from the Bug to the cityscape/landscape beyond. The building was sorely lacking anything interesting so I decided to "jazz" things up and one thing led to another with the addition of the clarinet player, the blue banner, I Love New York City and finally the addition of an abudnace of Indian Paintbrush -- Wyoming's state flowers -- in the foreground. These actually appeared in the transparency with the Volkswagen, I just "pushed" it a little.
ABOUT MY ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS
I use only the finest oil paints and stretched fine art canvas. This large original oil painting comes stretched and ready to hang or frame. Although no absolute guarantee can be given as to longevity, I have followed to the best of my knowledge, those principals that best ensure an oil painting's ability to stand against the ravages of time.
This is not a knock-off. This is an original piece of fine art done using my own reference materials and techniques. My painting style is not based upon that of any other artist, living or dead, but is the culmination of years of study, experimentation and practice.
